This amendment certified that suffrage could not be rejected by “race, color, or previous condition of servitude”. However, it did not give women the right to vote. Women’s suffrage would come from the Nineteenth Amendment in the 1920s. It supplemented the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendment, and was a great triumph. It even encouraged African Americans to run for office and to become more interested in politics.
